I've received this email topic a chillian times.
"How do I motivate my kid without putting too much pressure on them?"
My response is simple.
Build them up every chance you get.
Baseball is the biggest self-esteem destroying sport in the world.
Yes - players need to be held accountable and some players respond well to firmness...
...but each player is different, and at the end of the day they need to know you care before they care what you know.
Coaching youth baseball is simple.
Make it fun.
Trust me - Vanderbilt isn't gonna care if your kid's team won the Burger King classic this year.
If you want to help your kid play at the next level help them to:
- develop a true love for the game
- make playing baseball about helping the team win instead of about them
- develope real instincts
I've said it early on and I've said it often.
Baseball is so mental it's mind-blowing.
If your kid has ability but their abilities aren't showing up, it's not their abilities fault.
It's the mind, it's the approach and it's their compete level.
If their compete level ever goes below their ability level, they will underachieve.
